555 Timer IC Inverter Overview
Hi. In this tutorial I'll show you how to make an inverter (12V DC to 220V AC) based on the popular NE555 timer and a few other components. It can output 600W easily with minimal cooling. With this, you can power many electronic devices that don't necessarily need a pure sine wave AC.
The Inverter is a simple Push-Pull topology where during the first stage one half winding of the transformer coil is connected across ground and positive voltage supply, and during the second stage the other half side of the primary winding is connected across ground and positive battery supply voltage. The output voltage is directly proportional to the transformer turns ratio between the primary and secondary windings. For 12V DC to 220V AC, the turns ratio between the primary and secondary windings is about 19. This means that each half of the primary turns to secondary turns ration is actually 19, so the total number of primary windings is double that because of the center tapping.
